The HVP Sponsorship scheme allows disadvantaged children to benefit from a quality education, when in some cases they would not have one at all due to the circumstances of their families. In some cases families are unable to support their children through school (even government schools have associated costs such as uniform and books), and the children are required to work instead so that they contribute to their own upkeep. This destroys their future opportunities for a choice of career or further studies, and prevents them from developing the life-skills and sense of social responsibility nurtured by a good schooling.
The hostels allow HVP to offer full support for children from such families, so that they can receive the education they deserve without this burdening the family. A girl's hostel in Kathmandu would allow this scheme to extend further.
This dream is very close to becoming a reality, thanks to the hugely generous legacy left to HVP UK by long-term supporter and friend Christine Russell. A large proportion of her invaluable donation will go towards the building work necessary to found this hostel, and the new hostel will be dedicated to her memory. Further donations are necessary to complete the project, however, and to cover its running costs for the future.
